Freemason's Hall, London

Internal & Emergency Lighting Scheme

Brief:

To convert the existing listed period pendants to LED type so that the artificial lighting was reliable and energy efficient.

To design an emergency escape lighting system to all main escape routes within the building.

To design an exit strategy so that guests are guided to the nearest exit in the case of an emergency.

Details:

Freemasons halls contain a variety of different decorative pendants and each pendant contained out of date lighting technology and had to be converted with LED products that not only functioned well & maintained light levels but also retained the integrity of the pendant by mimicking the original light distribution & effect.

CES partnered with BCS luminaires to develop the conversion strategy. BCS luminaires successfully converted the pendants through a comprehensive conversion process.

Adapting the wiring to suit the emergency lights was challenging as all the cables are buried within the wall and running through the old conduit system which was inaccessible in many parts of the building.

Due to the difficulty of adding new cables in the building, the exit signs were bespoke and non-illuminated. The bronze frame, glass pictogram and size were all developed to ensure that the signs were in keeping with the architecture.

The lighting is now not only reliable and running at a lower cost but also retains the original integrity of the halls as well as enabling people to see to safely exit the building in the event of a power loss in an emergency situation.

A unique project and challenge which we thoroughly enjoyed.
